Commercial Mold Remediation Services in Grand Rapids?

2/27/2024 (Permalink)

Wood planks are covered in mold. We are leaders in commercial mold remediation services in Itasca County.

Grand Rapids businesses rely on our local Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams to restore mold damage. Mold outbreaks can occur in commercial buildings during the winter for several reasons.

First, colder temperatures often reduce ventilation as buildings are sealed to conserve heat, creating a stagnant indoor environment. This reduced airflow can trap moisture indoors, especially when occupants bring wet shoes and clothing. Additionally, heating systems can create temperature differentials between indoor and outdoor environments, causing condensation on walls, windows, and ceilings. This moisture provides an ideal breeding ground for mold.

Second, commercial buildings often have limited occupancy during winter, resulting in less internal heat generation and lower indoor temperatures. Lower temperatures can lead to higher relative humidity levels, as cold air can't hold as much moisture as warm air. This increased humidity can contribute to mold growth on surfaces and in building materials.

Third, inadequate insulation and improper maintenance can allow cold air to infiltrate the building, leading to temperature fluctuations and condensation. Poorly sealed windows and doors and damaged roofs or plumbing leaks can introduce moisture into the building, further promoting

Bad Odor in Commercial Property Bad for Business in Bemidji?

10/17/2023 (Permalink)

A customer holds their nose to avoid smelling an unpleasant odor in an office waiting room. We offer a full range of services to keep commercial properties looking and smelling great in Beltrami County.

Have you ever walked into a commercial business and walked back out due to smelling an unpleasant odor? Our Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing teams offer a full range of commercial deep cleaning services to eliminate bad odors and keep your business looking its best.

Many odor problems result from a combination of factors that build up over time, so you and your employees may have become “nose blind” to them, but your customers have not.

Our technicians are trained and certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification to identify and remove foul odors scientifically. This can be challenging as odors may come from several sources inside and outside of the building. We never mask odors or take shortcuts as these methods are not effective.

Odor Identification Process

The first step is to identify the source of the smell and locate where the odor is contacting surfaces. Sometimes the odors originate from more than one location in the building.

Odor Elimination Process

Once we identify the cause of the odor and determine the conditions where it contacts surfaces, the odor can often be removed over time without a trace. Our technicians use several odor removal products capable of thoroughly penetrating surfaces to neutralize unpleasant scents.

What Can I Do If the Pipes Freeze in My Bemidji Business?

1/3/2023 (Permalink)

Water draining from a downspout is frozen. We are leaders in property damage restoration services in Itasca County.

Our local team in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing responds to commercial property damage emergencies every year in Bemidji. Here are some tips on how to thaw frozen pipes from the American Red Cross:

How to Thaw Frozen Pipes
  • If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Typical places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
  • Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will start to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the line.
  • Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or another open flame device.
  • Apply heat until the full water pressure is restored. If you cannot locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you cannot thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
  • Check all other faucets to find out if you have additional frozen pipes

Tree Damages Commercial Building in Grand Rapids?

12/20/2022 (Permalink)

A large tree has fallen by an apartment complex. We respond to commercial property damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Itasca County.

Our local team in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing provides tree removal services in Grand Rapids. According to the Minnesota Department of National Resources, there are some things that you should not do when addressing damaged or fallen trees.

Don’t do the following:

  • Use an unqualified tree service. Ask for references and proof of insurance.
  • Repair a broken branch or fork of a tree with tape, wire, bolts, or other wraps. The wound will not heal, and the split will invite decay and further weaken the tree. Cabling or bracing should only be performed by a certified arborist and inspected annually.
  • Remove the tops of trees. This makes the tree more susceptible to insects and disease and promotes the growth of new branches that are weakly attached.
  • Apply paint or dressing to wounds, as these materials interfere with a tree’s natural wound-sealing process
  • Remove small, leaning trees. Trees less than 15 feet tall may survive if gently pulled back into place. Press out air spaces in the loosened soil. The tree can then be staked for up to a year.
  • Fertilize stressed or damaged trees. Fertilizers can trigger rapid but weak growth and deplete the tree’s energy reserves needed to recover from damage.

How Can I Prepare My Commercial Property for Winter in Bemidji?

10/3/2022 (Permalink)

A frozen roof on a commercial building is shown. We restore commercial storm damage in Beltrami County.

Do you know your roof’s maximum snow load? Winter is coming, and our local team in Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Hibbing wants businesses to prepare for the winter season. Here is some information about roof snow loads from the Insurance Institute of Business and Home Safety:

Know your roof’s maximum snow load

When it comes to the weight of snow, the type of snow is as important as the depth of the snow. For instance, fresh powder snow is typically lighter than wet packed snow, and ice is heavier than snow.

Snow Load Danger signs

Fresh snow – more than four feet

Packed snow – more than two feet

Ice – one inch or more

Several factors contribute to the acting load on your roof, including snow drifts from adjacent buildings or mechanical equipment, heavy rain on snow, and melting snow that refreezes.

If you don’t know your roof’s snow load, hire a structural engineer to verify the snow load threshold of the roofing system. This information will be important when determining if there is too much snow on the roof after an event.

The ventilation system in a building is shown. We clean and restore HVAC and ductwork in Itasca County.

Have you had your air ducts and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system inspected and cleaned lately? According to the United States Department of Energy, twenty-five to forty percent of the energy used for heating or cooling is wasted when HVAC systems are dirty.

  • Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system
  • Although filters are used, the heating and cooling system still gets dirty through regular use
  • When an HVAC system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the desired temperature. As a result, less energy is used, leading to improved cost-effectiveness.

Hidden Water Damage in Grand Rapids Business?

5/17/2021 (Permalink)

A large, dark water stain is shown forming on the ceiling in a commercial building. We mitigate commercial water damage emergencies in Itasca County.

Early morning surprise in Grand Rapids.

I was surprised that the air conditioning unit was on when I came to work. Something smelled kind of damp, and I looked up to see a dark, moist stain forming on the office ceiling that was not visible before. Oh, oh. This is never a good look, which means there is a bigger problem hidden in the ceiling. My boss told me to call SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing.

Advanced Technology

The technicians arrived quickly and inspected the area and provided an assessment of the damage. They used an infrared camera to pinpoint the location of the water leak. It ended up being a cracked drip pan from the air conditioning unit, so it was a pretty easy fix. The ceiling panel and the drip pan were replaced, and now you would never know there had been an ugly stain on the ceiling of our office!

Overnight mold in Hibbing.

When the maid went to clean the room and get it ready for the next guest, she smelled something musty and looked up and saw the mold covering the ceiling of the room. We called SERVPRO® of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing, and they came out right away and assessed the situation.

The drain pan inside the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system had moisture in it that encouraged the mold to grow. They cleaned the HVAC system to eliminate the excess moisture problem and performed a number of operations to contain and remediate the mold. By the time they completed the air filtration, and cleaned, deodorized the room, you would never know there had been a mold infestation in the room.

Electrical fire Commercial Electrical Fire

SERVPR BGRH works to make it "Like it never even happened." Fire, Smoke and Soot clean up and restoration are one of the services provided and knowing the types of smoke patterns are vital to proper restoration.

An electrical fire can initially smell like plastic burning and experts say you are lucky if you smell something as most warning signs are invisible and odorless. Electrical fires are often caused by faulty outlets or outdated appliances. Appliances with frayed cords can cause a fire by sending heat onto combustible surfaces like floors, curtains, and rugs. Running cords under rugs is another fire hazard and should never be done.

According to the Hunker website, water can also start a fire as the moisture can rapidly increase the current in the circuit. This will cause a short circuit as the fuse is blown. If there is no fuse present, the wire will heat up and a fire could start.

Five Safety Tips

  1. Keep an eye on damaged outlets
  2. Replace frayed cords
  3. Avoid extension cords
  4. Install designated circuit breakers
  5. Never pull plugs out by the cord

3 things to know about Sandbags

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

When faced with a storm in Northern MN, you may be considering the possibility of a sand bag wall to protect your home or business. Many water damage restoration services recommend taking steps to mitigate damage before it occurs as a way to protect the property and reduce clean up times and costs. A flood dam is one way to do this. Here is what you may want to know.

1. How They Work

In most cases flood dams works by directing water flow away from the threatened area. Many people choose sandbags as they are easy to build in a variety of protective formations. Dry sand is loaded into the bag, and the bag is then folded and placed to create a wall. When the water reaches the wall it is absorbed by the sand which then becomes heavier, harder to move, and creates a tighter seal.

2. Where to Place Them

When creating a sand bag barrier to protect your business it’s recommended to construct it in a way that directs the flow of water rather than trying to block it. This will put less force on the wall, and keep the water moving to a safe drainage location. Consider setting the barrier up so that the water flows down hill and away from the property, or into a drainage ditch or open field where it can disperse safely.

3. When to Use Them

One of the best ways to reduce flood damage is to know when to use a flood dam. In most cases you may want to consider the use of sand bags any time you believe flooding may pose a high risk to the property.

When making a sand bag wall or using another flood dam type to protect your company it’s important to understand how they work and where to place them to direct water flow. Using these tools properly may help you reduce the amount of damage your business could face in the next big storm.

A Not So Typical Commercial Job

12/19/2018 (Permalink)

Often when you see something regarding a commercial job, it is involving a fire or a flood.  Not often do you see something different.  This year we got a call from a commercial company for us to come in because of suspected use of methamphetamine's in the apartment.  They wanted us to come in and test the home as well as complete the clean up.  So, we went in and administered a test to determine if there was methamphetamine residue in the home.  Unfortunately, it did come back positive.

Now when dealing with a job like this we had to make sure that we were properly dressed in the proper PPE so that nothing harmful happened to any of us.  All the contents needed to be pulled from the home and thrown away due to the drug residue.  Like a Fire job all the receptacles and outlets must be pulled apart and cleaned because the residue can get into even the smallest of openings.  Carpeting and the padding underneath also need to come out because there is no way of cleaning it due to the drug residue.  The sub floor needs to be sealed where the carpet was like a mold job.  Anything that would have come in contact with the methamphetamine needs to be deep cleaned or thrown away.  Any surface that is not able to be cleaned must be painted.

The cleaning for a job like this is comparable to a Bio, Mold, and Fire job combined.  So, when you think about a commercial job it is not always just fire and water.  There is no job to big for us to handle!

When it comes to commercial and residential restoration services, SERVPRO is a leader in the industry. Available 24 hours a day and seven days a week, SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids & Hibbing responds quickly to your business’s fire, water, and mold damage emergencies. June from Bemidji asked: How big of a job can you guys handle?

Commercial Loss

Well June the answer to that question is fairly simple; we can handle them all.
